Purpose :
This project will capacitate 50 young and women tech-savvy journalists on the rights and responsibilities
of digital journalism.
Context and need for the project :
Recent political, social, cultural, and economic transformations in Sri Lanka largely affected free media in
Sri Lanka. From Late March (30), until now, at least 15 journalists are either attacked or intimidated. The
MSI study conducted by IREX (2018, 2019, 2020) confirmed that free media is largely affected due to
various factors including impunity, lack of conducive policy, organizational support, and very importantly
lack of training. A large number of young journalists that are producing content for various mainstream
media organizations do not adequately follow globally accepted professional ethics, especially in the
digital media sphere. Young journalists view the digital sphere as an avenue to produce fast news
without adequately checking for accuracy. Similarly, several studies observed that with the male-
dominated media environment, voice, representation, and space for women journalists are either
suppressed or limited. The project proposal by SLWJA strategically addresses these two issues.
