SLWJA STRONGLY CONDEMN SHOOTING AT UNARMED PROTESTERS BY THE POLICE AND DEATH OF A YOUTH AT RAMBUKKANA
Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association is shocked and saddened to hear about the shooting and loss of life in the incident at Rambukkana this evening (19th April 2022) where the Police are alleged to have shot at unarmed protesters.
SLWJA strongly condemn the use of bullets to suppress peaceful protesters demanding solutions to the country’s deepening economic crisis instead of listening to their demands.
This incident is a recollection of the shooting and repression of unarmed people protesting for drinking water during the tenure of then President Mahinda Rajapaksha where the current President Gotabaya Rajapaksha was then Defense Secretary. SLWJA is of the view that all sorts of emerging crises in the country will be exacerbated by the recurrence of such acts.
SLWJA would like to emphazise that such action make the public more provocative and therefore make wise decisions when dealing with them, and urge the government to listen responsibly in resolving people’s issues and provide fair solutions. Also SLWJA demands that steps be taken to legally punish the Police Officers involved in this incident.
